Whether you are poor or rich, there are basic steps you can take to improve and prolong life and also protect your health and that of your family.  By taking care of your health, you can greatly increase the quality of your life and avoid shortening it.  By word and living an exemplary life, you can also teach your children to form good habits which will result in good health.  In this post, I will talk about 4 basic health keys that will help you live a healthy and quality life.

Tip 1: Guard Your Health.

Keep yourself and your home clean. According to U.S Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s report, 80 percent of infections are said to be passed on through unclean hands.  So wash your hands regularly especially before eating, preparing food, touching a wound, animal, changing a baby’s diaper and using the toilet.  Try as much as possible to keep your hands away from your mouth and eyes.  Take your bath at least twice a day, use soap and water, use mild soaps and antiseptics.  Brush and floss your teeth at least two times a day (After meal and before going to bed).  Keep your clothes clean always including your bed linens.  Always ensure that your home is neat and tidy.  Eliminate any place where mosquito can breed; Use treated mosquito nets and insect repellants to ward off ants and insects.  Dispose garbage, litter and rotten foods properly and keep your toilet clean always.

Avoid Infectious Diseases. Do not expose yourself to danger.  Take vaccinations to prevent some infections.  When dealing with persons with infectious diseases like cold or flu, avoid physical contacts with their nasal secretions and saliva so that the illness will not be passed to you.  Also be wise and cautious when you come in contact with people with blood related diseases like HIV/AIDS.  Avoid sex relationship and fluid contact with them.  Do not engage in habits that can give you injury.  If you smoke, quit to avoid heart disease, lung cancer and stroke.

Tip 2: Eat Healthy.

Eat real foods especially fresh fruits and vegetables.  Processed and canned foods usually contain high level of sugar, salt and fats which are associated with heart disease, cancer, obesity and other serious illnesses.  Steam and bake your food instead of frying.  Use more of herbs and spices to cut down on salt.  Avoid eating too much food at a time.  Dish your food in small quantities and encourage your children to do so.  Most of all drink plenty of water and other fluids that do not contain much sugar.  These liquids aid digestion, cleanses your body, keeps the skin healthy and help in reducing your weight.  Do not take much alcohol, soft drinks and avoid smoking of tobacco products.

Tip 3: Take Care of Your Body.

Sleep well especially at night.  Studies show that adults need seven to eight hours of sleep every day and children more to be able to perform well.  Sleep is critical to good health.  It strengthens the immune system and cuts down the risk of infection.  Always go for medical checkups and go to the hospital when you are sick.  Do not indulge in self medication; this is because some illnesses require professional medical attention and to diagnose them early is much better and less expensive.

Tip 4: Exercise Your Body.

No matter how old or young you may be, exercising your body will help you lead a physically active life.  It will also help you feel happier, think more clearly and be more productive.  You can exercise your body through jogging, walking, biking and other spotting activities.  You can as well register for a gym if your have the time. It is also important to use your foot to trek to short distances instead of cars, buses and trains. Use the staircase instead of elevators.  These activities will help you break a sweat and get your heart breath faster and this helps to prevent heart attack.

When you start making these modifications in your life, do not try to get it right at the same time thereby inflicting pains on your body, do it gradually.  It takes a while to adopt a new style of life.   Nevertheless, it is good to start doing something than not doing anything at all.  Even if you did not see results immediately, don't worry, if you persist, you will get a great result.

Stop those activities that will shorten your life, rather help yourself to fulfill the days that God has given you on the earth.
